Degree Overview:

  • Major: Total of 33 credits, including a course in logic; five elective courses (not more than one of which is a 100-level course, and three of which are 300- or 400-level courses); the two-term sequence in the history of philosophy: PHIL 310 and PHIL 311; and PHIL 400, the senior capstone, taken in conjunction with any 300-level elective. Exceptional students are encouraged to do an honors thesis in philosophy, PHIL 499.

  • Minor: Total of 20 credits, including 310, 311 and two electives with at least one at the 300-level, and 12 elective credits with no more than 4 credits at the 100-level.

Degree Requirements:

Major in Philosophy

To complete a philosophy major, a student must complete 33 credits in the following:

24 credits from Critical Thinking/Critical Theory

  • 4 credits in Logic and Critical Reasoning (PHIL 110R)
  • No more than 8 credits at the 100-level may be counted toward the 33 credits (including 110R).
  • At least 12 credits at the 300-level, in addition to the Historical/Professional Philosophy sequence (PHIL 310, 311 and 400)

9 credits in the Historical/Professional sequence

  • 8 credits in the two-term sequence in history of Western philosophy:
    • PHIL 310: Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (offered fall semesters)
    • PHIL 311: Modern Philosophy (offered spring semesters)
  • 1 credit: Senior Seminar (400) (offered in conjunction with any 300-level elective)
